Mujibnagar Government
17 April 1971. Mujibnagar is the headquarters or administrative center of the first government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh or the Bangladesh Government in Exile. At the beginning of the Liberation War of Bangladesh, the village of Baidyanathtala in Meherpur subdivision of the greater Kushtia district was named Mujibnagar. The first government of Bangladesh was formed on April 10, 1971, and it was decided to take the oath of office in the free zone of Chuadanga on April 14. But despite the matter being highly confidential, this information was leaked to one or two international media outlets including Akashvani. In the changed circumstances, the place of the oath-taking was decided at Baidyanathtala in Meherpur subdivision on April 17.

Abdul Mannan MNA conducted the oath-taking ceremony. Professor Yusuf Ali MNA read out the Declaration of Independence. Syed Nazrul Islam administered the oath to the cabinet members. Acting President Syed Nazrul Islam was given a guard of honor at the ceremony led by DSP Mahbub Uddin Ahmed of Police. Locals Shahabuddin Ahmed Sentu, Pintu Biswas, Mansur Uddin Molla and Asadul Haque performed the national anthem while the national flag was hoisted by the Acting President. Baker Ali, Pintu Biswas and Nani Gopal Bhattacharya read from the Holy Quran, Bible and Tripitaka respectively. A large number of people from the surrounding area, led by Doaz Ali Master and Ayub Hossain of the local struggle committee, chanted the slogans 'Joy Bangla, victory of Banglar Jay, Bir Bengali Astro Dharo, Bangladesh Swadhin Karo'.

On April 17, 1971, the first acting President Syed Nazrul Islam was awarded a Guard of Honor at Mujibnagar, in what is now known as the Mango Garden (Ambanagan) village of Baidyanathtala, in the Meherpur district of Bangladesh. This event marked the swearing-in of the First Government of Bangladesh, with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman appointed as its president. The First Government was established in Mujibnagar on April 10, 1971. The cabinet oath-taking ceremony was held on April 17, 1971. The area was later named Mujibnagar.
